Coaches are subject to approval by Smyrna Junior Basketball League Board of Directors.
Background Check
ALL Smyrna Junior Basketball League coaches are required to complete a background check each season, as required by law.
Concussion Check
Concussion Training is required each season. Even if you’ve completed training for another league/sport, we must have your certificate on file.
Qualities of a Good Coach
Knows Basketball
Have an understanding of fundamental basketball skills and some tactics and strategies. Know and understand the rules of the game.
Motivates
Keep practices fun and challenging, encourage each athlete to believe in himself, and provide a supportive environment for players.
Instills Discipline in Athletes
Establish rules of conduct for athletes to follow both on and off the court. When violations occur, appropriate, immediate and consistent discipline follows.
Leads By Example
Maintain a positive attitude for his athletes to emulate. Be a model of integrity, dignity and honesty, following the rules he sets out for his players.
Communicates Effectively With Players
Provide clear instructions and feedback, re-frame instructions if players don’t understand them, use language that is respectful to the athletes.
Is A Good Listener
Listen to players’ concerns and ideas, and be able to summarize and “mirror back” what players have said for maximum clarity and understanding.
Is Dedicated And Committed
Coach because you want to teach basketball to kids. Be at games and practices on time. Communicate with your parents.
